Special Report - Case Study

How a simple ebook has sold for five years straight... and still makes enough money to cover my house payment, 2 car payments and the electric bill!

By Jim Edwards

A case study of Jim Edwards' very first ebook still selling at www.FSBOHelp.com

In 1997 when I put my first book, "Selling Your Home Alone", on the Internet, I had absolutely no clue what was going to happen.  Five years later this same ebook sells consistently month after month and now makes enough money to cover my house payment, two car payments and the electric bill!

But it wasn't always this way ...

When I first put my ebook online, my goal was just to make a few extra bucks! I had no clue you could make a full time living selling ebooks on the Internet. I don't think the term "ebook" had been invented yet!  Boy did I have a lot to learn, but learn I did and this is the story of how I transformed a money hobby into a significant income.

This case study is a two-part process

=====
Part 1
=====

In 1993 I had an idea to write a book. Originally I planned to try getting it published by traditional print publishers. When I finally got around to writing the book in 1996 I took about a year... I had absolutely no clue what I was doing.  I had the attitude, like most people, that writing a book was supposed to take a long time, therefore, it did!

So when I finished the book I went out and had 30 copies made, went to the library and got a copy of the "Writer's Market" and mailed all 30 copies of my manuscript off to publishers.  They cost $15 each to print and mail. I was already $450 in the hole!

After about 2 months I started to get "answers"! But they weren't the answers I wanted!

About half of the manuscripts were returned unopened and the other half either came back with rejection "form" letters or I never heard anything at all.  It was four months of waiting, hoping, and ultimately, a lot of disappointment that soured me on the entire book writing process.

I stuck the manuscript in the closet and pretty much forgot about it - I thought I wasn't destined to write and publish a book.

About six months later I was at my college homecoming drinking beer with one of my fraternity brothers. During the usual "catch up" conversations I discovered that he and his father had opened a website hosting company... which was a bit unusual back in 1997.  After a few beers and a lot of discussion, I decided to put my book up on the Internet and try to sell it.

I spent about five weeks learning how to put together a site that was ultimately 40 pages long. At the time, I thought I was "supposed" to give away a whole lot of information in order to keep people at my site so they would eventually want to buy my book. At that time, the total cost to run the site and host it was about $150 a month - which to me was a lot of money, especially when you consider I hadn't sold the first book yet!

Everything was very basic.

The book was not really formatted... in fact I was selling it as a Word file that most anyone could rip off. It was just raw text divided up into "chapters".

The website was loud and obnoxious and it didn't really have a focus. But despite all this, I was selling ebooks because my audience was so specific - I was targeting people who wanted to sell their house and save the commission.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but that's pretty much where this project stayed for almost two years! I was making money, but I really didn't see anything more than just a part-time income potential for my ebook.

At that point I was content to make an extra couple hundred dollars a month.

My how things change...

========
Part Two
========

I went to a 3-day seminar that cost $2,000 a person to attend and I met a man who, without exaggeration, really did change my life!

I don't think he realizes it, and I don't even know whether he would care (but I think he might), but the two hours that I listened to him has resulted in MANY extra tens-of-thousands of dollars in my pocket!

What I learned from him wasn't the entire Internet marketing "puzzle", but at the time it filled in all the missing pieces and helped me transform my business from a money hobby into a serious online career.

I'll tell you the man's name in just a minute ...

What I learned from him was a method for creating website sales copy that eliminated all the "free" stuff, all the "stickiness", and all the "traditional" online marketing techniques and philosophies I had been exposed to so far.

I listened intently as he related stories of people who had literally changed their lives by using his method for creating website copy that, in his words, "had people reaching for their wallets to give you money... almost against their will!"

So I took notes like a madman during the two hours he spoke. I literally took 30 pages of notes... I was so intent that I tried to write down every single word this man said because his words were speaking directly to me!

It was everything I needed at that point in my life! I knew deep down inside me I MUST learn to do what he was teaching. I knew that what I was learning could change my business so radically and so quickly that I could barely wait to get home from the seminar and put it into practice.

The first night I got home from the seminar I sat in my tiny, cramped home-office and made changes... I did what this man told me to do.  I took my 40 page web site and turned it into a one-page web site.

I got rid of all the free stuff ... I got rid of all the "feel-good" stuff ... I got rid of everything except what this guy told me to put into my web site.

When I finished I had a one-page site that was pretty long (8 pages when printed), but I felt confident that I had done what he told me to do... and now it was time to put the pedal to the metal.  I uploaded the new one page website to my existing domain and went to bed - it was pretty late.

What happened next may shock you...

[Side Note:] I'm not going into how I generate traffic to the site in this report. We've written an entire book on how to generate traffic to your website called "33 Days to Online Profits". You may even own a copy. If you don't, I *strongly* encourage you to pick one up here

My site was already getting between 100 and 150 unique visitors a day. Remember, I had already worked two years to get the traffic level to that point.  My problem wasn't getting visitors... my problem was converting them into buyers!

Anyway, back to the story...

When I woke up the next morning I knew my life had changed... I just didn't realize how much!  I opened my email and saw I had made four sales at $29 apiece!

Now $116 may not sound like a lot to you, but when I had previously only been making about a dozen sales a month, four sales in one night was a BIG deal!

That month I made more sales than I had made the previous six months!

In three months I made more than I did the previous year... all by changing the focus of my site from providing content to actually selling my ebook!

Since then I've been concentrating on increasing traffic to the site. I've experimented with pay-per-click search engines, free articles, and many of the other techniques we teach people in "33 Days to Online Profits".

I'm not in the real estate business anymore and haven't been for over four years ... but that book still makes enough money every single month to cover my house payment, two car payments and the electric bill.

In fact, that one book made it possible for me to move into my new house!

So what should you get out of this case study?

Number 1 - Learn how to write a killer one-page sales letter... because this skill can literally make your fortune and help you achieve financial freedom - or at least financial success greater than what you have now!

Number 2 - Get in the game and start learning, trying, and doing things! You'll never make money online sitting there wishing you could make money. Wishing and hoping doesn't do it!

Number 3 - Sell something people want, need, and are actually looking for online. We prefer information products and ebooks because there is nothing physical to deliver or ship.

Number 4 - Never stop learning! Never stop trying! Never stop doing things and experimenting with ways to make your business better.

Oh, by the way, the man's name who taught me how to write this one-page sales letter that set me on the path that changed my life?
